Edutopia 2

Teaching internet safety should begin as soon as a student uses a device. Many students know how to handle strangers in person but not online. Students are taught how to handle strangers in person but not online. Discussing online predators is something that needs to happen around kindergarten or first grade. Asking simple questions to the class can promote an interactive discussion. Interactive quizzes can also be given to reinforce information taught about online safety.
  • Using real world examples might help students recognize an online stranger more easily. Video games and social media are platforms students will be able to relate to.
  • Reinforce what is ok and not ok to tell online strangers. Birthdays, phone numbers, and addresses are just a few things not to tell strangers.
  • Follow up by reminding students that not everyone is bad but they need to stay protected.
Teaching digital safety is very important in today's world. Kids are starting to receive iPads before they even know how to speak. Staying up-to-date with technology and digital literacy will help your students and yourself stay safe from online predators. Starting students young with learning about online predators will help them stay aware as they age.
